Why the Change?
Since 2015 I have owned the domain name Kaisev.net. I intentionally chose .net instead of .ca because I believe that the Internet should be for everyone, and I wanted my site to be for everyone. I did not want to give the false impression that my site was only for or relevant to Canadians. I still believe this, and I strongly support net neutrality and oppose region-locking, none of that has changed.
What has changed is my concerns with where my money is going. Over the years I have become more aware of the money I'm spending going towards groups and causes that are not aligned with my beliefs. In the case of my .net domains, I am referring of course to the United States. Relying on US providers has become a security issue, but more importantly has become an ethical issue. As such I am working to sever ties, starting with financial ones. I have moved off of Namecheap to WHC, I have moved off of GSuite and on to Fastmail, and now I am moving off of .net and instead relying solely on my Canadian .ca domain.
What will this mean going forward?
The same services will generally work on kaisev.ca as they did on kaisev.net. The glaring exception is Mastodon, which I will not be migrating for a few reasons:
- The Mastodon stack is overkill for a single user instance
- I don't like the post length limit
- Changing the domain of a Mastodon instance is generally considered to be a bad idea
So my plans are to start a new instance, likely using gotosocial. I will then shut down mastodon.kaisev.net permanently when my domain expires. Right now that looks to be October 2027.
The plan is to have all services fully running on kaisev.ca by the end of the year. At this point I will configure rewrite rules on the server to direct users to the correct domain. I will leave this in place until the domain expires, again likely October 2027.
Timeline
These are projected timelines, and life circumstances could interfere.
End of 2027 - All services migrated
- Have all services fully functional on kaisev.ca
- Set 301 redirects on all kaisev.net links
Some pages are already fully functional, as it becomes possible 301 redirects will be implemented immediately. the sooner this happens the less likely it is to have search results pointing to the old domain when it expires.
March 2028 - Search Engine Remediation
After there has been ample time for the search engines to realize what is happening, I will make sure they have done so, and take action if not.
- Search for common terms on common search engines, and confirm results only point to kaisev.ca
- Use the Google Search console to migrate the page, only if required
October 12 2029 - Kaisev.net Expires
At this point the Kaisev.net domain will expire, and I will not be renewing it. This means someone else can purchase it and use it for malicious purposes if they want.
